Almost 133,000 North Carolinians cast ballots on the first day of early voting, according to data released by the State Board of Elections Thursday.

The board said that number is up from the last midterm election in 2014 when approximately 121,000 voters turned out on the first day.

According to elections officials, the number of ballots cast Wednesday was nearly 149,000, including mail-in absentee ballots. The initial data showed 43 percent of Wednesday’s voters were Democrats, nearly 31 percent were Republicans and just over 26 percent were registered unaffiliated.

More than 11,000 voters cast ballots in Mecklenburg County Wednesday.

Early voting will last 18 days, ending on Nov. 3. Voters can locate their county’s early voting location here. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
