Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather says his office will not seek criminal charges against a CMPD officer in the fatal shooting of a knife-wielding man in February.
Police said officer Daniel Flynn shot Charlie Shoupe, 27, after he repeatedly charged toward Flynn with the knife raised in his hand. Shoupe’s mother had called 911 to request Medic, saying her son had slashed his wrist and was trying to kill himself. Witnesses said Shoupe also stated that he wanted police to shoot him.
The district attorney's report said officer Flynn faced an “imminent threat of great bodily harm or death.” Footage from Flynn’s body camera showed the officer getting out of his police car, ordering Shoupe to get on the ground, and shouting that he didn’t want to shoot him.
