Cotham Tops Meck. Commission Race As Democrats Maintain Majority

Democrats will keep a 6 to 3 majority on the Mecklenburg County Commission.

Three Democrats and two Republicans ran for the Commission’s three at-large seats. They’re currently held by Democrats, and that won’t change. Former Chairwoman and Democrat Pat Cotham finished first in the at-large race, with 24 percent…a three point lead over the next-largest vote getter. Former Charlotte City Councilwoman Ella Scarborough won the second seat with 21 percent. The current commission chairman, Trevor Fuller, came in third, with a little over 20 percent of the vote.

Traditionally, the largest vote-getter is named chairman of the commission. But it will be interesting to see if that happens this time around, because county commissioners voted Cotham out of that role last year.

Former County Commissioner Jim Puckett replaces fellow Republican Karen Bentley in District 1. Republican Matthew Ridenhour won re-election in District 5. The remaining commissioners ran unopposed. Democrats Dumont Clarke, George Dunlap, and Vilma Leake, along with Republican Bill James will all serve another 2-year term.

The new commissioners will be sworn in in December.
