Cornelius police confirmed Saturday night they have arrested two Winston-Salem men in the hit-and-run death of a Cornelius man who was struck while walking on Bethel Church Road early Saturday. Witnesses helped police identify a vehicle that was located later a short distance from the incident scene. Shaw (left) and Kost Police responded to the report of a hit and run around 1:56 a.m. and found the man "unresponsive lying in the roadway," according to a police report. Police said witnesses described the vehicle, which police later found in a nearby neighborhood. The suspects - a driver and passenger - were located and arrested on multiple charges. In a press release Saturday night, Cornelius police said they had arrested Jacob Andrew Kost, 23, of Winston Salem, who was charged with murder, felony hit and run, driving while impaired, and driving while license revoked. His passenger, Jason Edward Shaw, 21, of Winston-Salem, was charged with being an accessory to murder. Both men were being held without bond Saturday night in Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte. On Saturday afternoon, several people were gathered on the side of Bethel Church Road, where someone placed a wreath marking the site of Mr. Sweet's death. Sharply curving skid marks could be seen in the road. Police said the crash is still under investigation and offered no further details.
