Concord Police Officer Charged With Statutory Rape, Child Abuse

A Concord police officer is charged with multiple counts of child abuse and rape. Cabarrus County Sheriff's ofice arrested officer Douglas Buckwell on Wednesday.

Officer Buckwell’s adopted daughter alleges he committed numerous sexual offenses against her between 2009 and 2015. She says many occurred before she was 16 years old.

Now Buckwell faces six felony and three misdemeanor charges, including sex offense with a child, statutory rape and child abuse. He’s been with the Concord Police Department 19 years, and he’s been a school resource officer since 2000. The sheriff's office says there’s no evidence of other victims outside the home, but the investigation is ongoing.

Concord police have put Buckwell on administrative leave without pay. In a statement, the police chief calls the allegations "horrific" and says, "Our badge of office has been tarnished." He says his department will have no further comments while the case plays out.
