CMS schools open in less than two weeks and school officials are still trying to fill teacher and bus driving positions.

One hundred and fourteen is the number of teacher positions that need to be filled, says CMS Superintendent Ann Clark.

“That’s less than one per school and less than one percent of our total teacher workforce, so we certainly want it to be at zero but we’re in great shape we feel for the opening of school,” Clark said.

It’s still a bit higher than last year this time when 98 teaching positions were vacant. Slightly more than half of this year’s openings are at the elementary level.

As for bus drivers, 95 positions are still open. Clark says 35 people are currently in training and are expected to be ready for assignments when school opens August 29. She says even with the remaining vacancies all bus routes will be covered.

“We will have all driver positions covered with either substitutes or lead drivers who are not typically on the road but are credentialed to be on the roads,” she said.

The district is in much better shape when it comes to principals, with only one vacancy at Briar Creek Academy. That position will be filled by a retired principal for the time being.
