CMS To Review Bus Stop Safety After Student Death

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plans to review bus stop and transportation safety procedures after an Olympic High School student was struck and killed Tuesday morning as she was crossing the street to board a bus.

According to CMPD, the 15-year-old was struck by an SUV around 6 a.m. in Steele Creek. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.

The driver of the car, Kevin Michael Signer, was traveling east on Youngblood Road near Buckthorne Ridge Lane. The student was crossing Youngblood Road to board the bus and was struck in the roadway, police said. CMPD said “speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in this crash.”

Police also said that the road had no overhead street lights, and there were no crosswalks or pedestrian signals.

CMS said it’s working with CMPD to “gain a clear understanding of [the] incident.”

The district is providing counseling and grief support for the family and school community.
