Police officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District are going door-to-door Uptown giving parents the run-down on bus changes and security restrictions during the Democratic National Convention.

CMS Police Chief Bud Cesena says the first week of September will pose some challenges for the 372 students and their families who live inside the I-277 loop.

"Some bus stops - because they're in the hot zone - won't exist any more," says Cesena. "So we're making sure the children and their parents know exactly where to go."

The district has sent automated phone messages about the changes and will distribute information on the first day of school, but "sometimes when you put something in a child's back pack, it just doesn't make it home," says Cesena.

CMS students who live uptown will have to catch their school bus at either Irwin or First Ward Elementary, but should not have to pass through any security checkpoints, says Cesena.

The district is also concerned about having up-to-date emergency contact information in the event DNC street closures make parents late to pick up kids after school.

CMS police spent last Thursday, Friday and Saturday speaking with Uptown parents and will be out knocking on doors again tonight and tomorrow.
