CMS New Enrollment Smaller Again

CMS officials say there are more than 1,700 new students enrolled in the district this year. This number is based on an already lowered projection for growth in the district. Scott McCully heads student placement at CMS. He says the economy is a major factor in the lowered enrollment. "Obviously the employment sector. When we have high employment brings families to the Charlotte area. that's basically the reason for our enrollment growth year after year," he says. With the economic downturn, companies in the region have cut back on hiring. McCully says in addition, a decline in housing starts is an indicator that fewer families are moving to the area. Wake County and Guilford County schools, also saw lowered enrollment.
