CMS On 2-Hour Delay; Cancellations, Closings Related To Irma

Updated 2:50 p.m.
Tropical Storm Irma is bringing closings and cancellations around the region, from school districts in western North Carolina and South Carolina to flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Here’s a partial list, which we’ll update as new listings arrive:

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will operate Tuesday on a two-hour delay because of rain and wind related to Hurricane Irma remnants. A statement from CMS says the decision was made "out of an abundance of caution."
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport reports that Southwest Airlines has suspended operations in Charlotte until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
  • American Airlines is operating from Charlotte, but has canceled 353 flights as of about 2:15 p.m. because many airports in the Southeast are closed. American advises people not to come to the airport if they don't have a ticket already. See the advisory and airport closings list at AA.com
  • NCDOT postponed a meeting Monday night in Monroe on proposed improvements to the US 74/US 601/NC 207 interchange. No new date has been announced.
  • Sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed through Tuesday from Virginia line south. From Milepost 165, at Virginia State Route 8 south through North Carolina to Milepost 469 at Cherokee. Details: https://www.nps.gov/blri/learn/news/irma-release-2.htm
  • Some schools in western NC have canceled classes, including school districts in Rutherford, Henderson, Jackson and Jefferson counties.
  • South Carolina state government offices are closed in some counties.  See http://www.scemd.org/closings .
  • Charlotte Area Transit System says it expects to operate normal service on its bus routes, LYNX light rail service and CityLYNX streetcar service. That could change if conditions worsen. Updates will be posted at ridetransit.org, on Twitter and Facebook or by calling 704-336-7433
