The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has named the officer who told a woman she couldn't file a police report after she said she was drugged at a popular uptown Charlotte bar.
CMPD said officer Sean Parker is under investigation after he told 31-year-old Leah McGuirk that she couldn't file a report without returning to the scene. McGuirk says she was drugged at Rooftop 210, a bar in the Epicentre Complex. She went to CMPD headquarters nearly two weeks after the incident to file a report when she ran into Parker.
Angered by the response, McGuirk posted in a video on YouTube explaining what happened.
“I tried to file a police report in downtown Charlotte, but the officer refused to let me file," she said, "stating that I would need to return the scene of the crime and call 911 from there.”
McGuirk went on to say she contacted Rooftop 210 but didn’t receive any assistance.
CMPD reached out to McGuirk and ended up taking a report on May 31. A CMPD spokeswoman said officers stationed at the entrance to police headquarters have been reminded of the protocol for filing reports since the incident.
Melanie Peacock, who at the time was the unit supervisor for sexual assault investigations at CMPD, said it isn’t true that victims need to return to the scene of the crime to file a report. Peacock has been promoted to Captain of the Westover Division. Lt. Muriel Hughes will take over as head of the sexual assault unit.
