The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department has released video footage showing a deadly officer-involved shooting from April 2016. It shows officers pleading with a man for more than an hour to put down his gun as police dogs bark and other officers look on with rifles drawn.

The man, 41-year-old Slyasone Ackhavong, sits on the hood of a parked car wearing a bullet-proof vest. He appears to point a handgun at officers and at himself multiple times during the encounter, including in the moments before he’s shot. The footage was captured by the convenience store cameras where the shooting occurred.

CMPD has also petitioned the court to release dash-cam and body-cam video footage of the encounter.

The two officers who fired, Officers Olin Lester and Derek Rud, were placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard after an officer-involved shooting.

In January 2017, Mecklenburg County's district attorney announced no charges would be filed against the officers. CMPD says they’ve since been placed back on patrol.
