(04/05/06) An officer who was shot in the head today while serving a warrant is out of surgery and a suspect in the shooting is in custody. Doctors at CMC said 37-year old officer Kayvan Hazrati was in serious, but stable condition following surgery. The shooting happened late this morning on Norcroft Drive off W.T. Harris Boulevard in the University Research Park area. Police identify the suspect as 32-year old Christopoher Dennis Ellerbe. Police were trying to arrest him on a rape warrant in South Carolina. Early Wednesday evening police took Ellerbe into custody. The man had been barricaded inside his home for about seven hours following the shooting. Police used tear gas and other devices shortly after 6 p.m. to end the standoff. According to police, doctors at Carolinas Medical Center said a bullet entered officer Hazrati's head and lodged in the front part of his brain. Hazrati was reportedly communicating with doctors through writing, able to answer questions and move his limbs, but unable to speak.
