CMPD Officer Involved In Fatal Wreck

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department

CMPD is investigating a fatal wreck involving one of its officers. The police department said officer Warith Muhammad, 40, was off duty and driving a marked SUV on West Sugar Creek Road early Saturday afternoon.  Police say a preliminary investigation found that a car driven by Lachandra McCorkle, 25, pulled into an intersection from Sofley Road.

The CMPD vehicle hit McCorkle's car on the driver's side.  She was pronounced dead at the hospital.  Police say McCorkle was wearing a seat belt.  Muhammad had minor injuries.

A CMPD release said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in the accident.  Last month, a pedestrian was killed when he was struck on Morehead Street by a police cruiser driven by CMPD officer Phillip Barker.  Police said Barker was going around 100 miles an-hour at the time.  Barker is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
