City Council Set To Vote On New Budget

Charlotte City Council members are set to vote Monday night on a budget that would keep the city's property tax rate steady, and put more police officers on Charlotte streets. The budget proposed six weeks ago by Charlotte City Manager Marcus Jones includes nearly $2.4 billion  in spending for city operations and capital expenses. While the budget does not increase Charlotte's property tax rate, water and sewer fees for city customers are set to increase by nearly $21 per year.

Under therecommended budget,CMPD could hire 62 new sworn officers, and the Charlotte Fire Department could add 18 firefighters at a station in the Eastland area.

The budget includes a 3 percent pool for merit pay raises for salaried city employees.  The spending plan would also allow Charlotte to boost minimum starting pay for city employees to $15 an hour in the new fiscal year, achieving that goal two years ahead of schedule.
