The proposed historic landmark designation of Charlotte’s old Wilmore Elementary school is back on the City Council agenda.
Wilmore Elementary opened in 1925 on West Boulevard, in what was then one of the city’s emerging “streetcar suburbs.” The school became a focal point of cultural and social life in the Wilmore community.
Since the 1960s, the neighborhood has undergone a series of demographic and economic changes, with a wave of revitalization over the past 15 years. Additions to the original two-story brick building were built in 1948 and 1970. No classes have been held at the school since 1978.
City Council members last month postponed a public hearing on the proposal to give historic landmark status to Wilmore Elementary. If the designation is ultimately approved, no significant changes to the building could be made without approval from the local Historic Landmarks Commission.
The hearing is on the agenda for the council’s 4:30 p.m. zoning meeting at the government center Monday. Council members are scheduled to vote on a separate historic landmark designation – for the old Highland Park Mill #1 on east 16th Street.
