CIAA tourney returns for 9th year - is it the last?

Get ready for a week of college basketball in Charlotte: The city is hosting the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s and women’s tournaments for the ninth year. Games begin Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena. Livingstone and Bowie State have the top seeds in the men’s tournament, while Fayetteville State and Virginia State top the women’s side. Charlotte’s Johnson C. Smith University’s men’s and women’s teams both have Number 5 seeds. The tournament annually brings thousands of fans and players to town for a week of games and parties. But could this be the last year in Charlotte? The CIAA’s contract with Charlotte ends after this year, and the Charlotte Observer reports today that it may cost the city more than its current $1 million payment to keep the tourney here.   The paper says 10 cities could be competing to host the event, which tourism officials say has about a $40 million economic impact every year.

ATV WRECK KILLS MAN

A 35-year-old man died Saturday afternoon when he tried to jump a creek on his all terrain vehicle in a wooded area of West Charlotte. Police said the fatal wreck happened around 5 o’clock as Marvin Davis rode the ATV off Dillard Valley Road, west of I-485.  Davis was speeding down a grassy hill attempting to jump a creek bed when the ATV struck the embankment on the other side of the creek.  He was thrown off the vehicle and died at the scene. Police blamed the wreck on speed, and said alcohol is not suspected. Davis was wearing a helmet.

DOT TO IMPROVE I-26 INTERCHANGE

If you drive on Interstate 26 in the North Carolina Mountains, you may be familiar with the interchange at Highway 191 just south of Asheville. State transportation officials call it one of the busiest intersections in the mountains, and they’re trying to figure out how to improve it. The Asheville Citizen Times reports that a public meeting is planned Tuesday in Asheville to begin gathering input.   Officials worry if traffic grows, congestion on the off ramps waiting to turn on NC 191 will back up onto I-26.
