Charlotte's Homicide Count Rises By Three

CMPD says two people were killed early Thursday in north Charlotte. Police also reported that the victim of a Monday night shooting died in the hospital on Wednesday. The three deaths bring the number of homicides this year in Charlotte to 53. That compares to 32 at this time last year.

In the latest case, police say one victim, identified as 65-year old Jacquline Gordon-White, was found dead shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday inside a home on Red Clay Lane, off West Sugar Creek Road.  A few hours later, a man was found dead inside the trunk of a car that an injured woman had driven to Carolinas Medical Center - University. Police did not immediately identify the male victim.

Police believe the two deaths are connected, but haven't said how the victims were killed. CMPD identified a suspect in both homicides as 40-year old Vurnel Smith, Jr. Police say he was last seen driving a black, 2017 Honda CR-V with NC license plate PAS-9116.

CMPD also reported that 17-year old victim in a shooting Monday on Charlotte's east side has died from his injuries. Police said Dionte' Hunter was critically injured when a man shot into a car at Monroe Road and McMullen Way at around 11 p.m. CMPD says Hunter died from his injuries on Wednesday at CMC-Main.   Police have charged 20-year old Steven Black with murder in that case. He was arrested Wednesday.
