Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Every year over seven thousand take the oath to become US citizens. Citizenship is something that easily taken for granted. Guest host Kirstin Garriss looks at what it takes to become one, and what obligations it brings with it.

It is almost the fourth of July. A time when we celebrate our independence and the birth of our democracy, with fireworks and cook outs. In the last decade over seven million people have taken the oath to citizenship.

Here in Charlotte  we will welcome dozens of new U.S. citizens at a ceremony at The Charlotte Museum of History.

Coming up on the next Charlotte Talks, we talk what it means to be a US citizen, the history behind the process, and how it has evolved over time.

GUESTS:

Pamela Wilson, press officer, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Brian Jones, U.S. history professor, JCSU

Javier Acevedo, future U.S. Citizen
