Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup: RNC Debate; New Panthers Owner David Tepper Speaks; CIAA Gone?

Friday, July 13 2018

Charlotte is the front runner for the Republican Convention in 2020.  Not everyone wants it, and the RNC is waiting for the city to decide.  The CIAA Conference is shopping around for a new city to host their tournament.  David Tepper, the new owner of the Panthers, talks about his goals and about the Richardson statue. Mike Collins and our roundtable of reporters tackles those stories and more on the Local News Roundup.

On this edition of the Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup…

It’s looking likely that Charlotte will host the 2020 Republican National Convention, with Republican officials reportedly finalizing details this week and sources reporting that there will be a vote by the City Council on the matter Monday. We discuss the contentious debate between the mayor and other city leaders that has emerged and the likely outcome of Monday's vote.

Another major event may be looking to leave the Queen City, as the CIAA Conference opens bidding to other cities for their basketball tournament beginning in 2021. The organization cited price gouging in Charlotte during tournaments in the past as one reason for possible move. We'll talk about what was said.

David Tepper’s purchase of the Carolina Panthers is now complete. He spoke this week about some of his goals for the organization, including a facilities upgrade and the state of the much talked about Jerry Richardson statue in front of the stadium. We’ll discuss.

And we’ll talk about the reaction by our local politicians to President Trump’s pick of Brett Kavanaugh for Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat on the US Supreme Court.

Those topics and more with host Mike Collins and our roundtable of reporters on the Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup.
