Charlotte Housing Authority Accepting Applications for Low-Rent Units

For the first time in years, people can now get on the waiting list for two, three and four-bedroom subsidized apartments in Charlotte. Housing Authority spokesperson Jennifer Gallman says Dillehay Courts north of Uptown and Boulevard Homes in West Charlotte are the only two complexes out of 26 managed by the city that now have waiting lists shorter than one year. "The agency looks at it as a big opportunity for families who are in need," says Gallman. "This does not happen often. There is a huge deficit, so we're hoping that we can provide some housing for some of those families out there." Mecklenburg County officials estimate a shortage of more than 11,000 affordable housing units for low-income families. Gallman says the reason Dillehay Courts and Boulevard Homes are now taking applications is because the Housing Authority recently transitioned from a central waiting list to keeping separate lists for each complex. Boulevard and Dillehay are the housing authority's largest communities, so their waiting lists move faster.
