This weekend art will be auctioned off to help victims of domestic violence.
The event is called "Art with a Heart." Donated paintings and sculptures will be auctioned off at Founders hall on Saturday night.
The event has raised over $1 million over the past 13 years for the group, Safe Alliance.
Much of the money went toward a new 80 bed shelter for victims of domestic violence. It nearly tripled the capacity of the old 29 bed facility.
The shelter has allowed the group to serve more women and children in need.
“Several years ago before we built the new shelter we were in a situation where we were having to turn away hundreds of women and children every year because we didn’t have the space to serve them,” says Safe Alliance’s Chief Advancement Officer Karen Parker. “So in this facility we’ll be able to serve over 1,000 women and children a year.”
The shelter has accepted 58 women and children since it opened last month. Parker expects it to be by full by mid February.
The group hopes the fundraiser will raise $150,000 to help support the new shelter’s higher operating costs.
