Carolinas Prepare For More Heavy Rain, Flooding

Hurricane Joachim continues to head east, away from the U.S. east coast, but heavy rain is hitting the Carolinas. About 2 inches of rain fell in the Charlotte area between Friday morning and noon Saturday, according to the National Weather Service

More than 10,000 Duke Energy customers in the Charlotte area were without power Saturday morning. That number was down to about 2,500 at of 2 p.m.

North Carolina governor Pat McCrory said at a press conference Saturday morning that officials expect the worst flooding in the state to be along the coast and in the mountains. McCrory said the most severe impacts were in Brunswick County in the southeast, on Ocracoke Island in the outer banks, and in Henderson County in the mountains.

In South Carolina, officials closed streets in downtown Charleston because of flooding.

The National Weather service has issued a flash flood watch through Monday morning and a wind advisory for the Charlotte area from Saturday night through Sunday evening.
