Boosting recycling with the help of corporate sponsors?

A Charlotte City Council Committee is considering an incentives program to drive up recycling sponsored by the Coca Cola Bottling Company and Harris Teeter. Here's the plan: Each household in Charlotte would receive a Coke sticker and information on how to properly recycle. Every week canvassers would look for recycling bins with a sticker on them and the right types of plastic, glass and paper. The chosen ten would each receive a $50 gift certificate to Harris Teeter. The program could be a success and a few city council members say that would be a problem. City officials say significantly upping the amount of recycling would cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra bins and pick-up costs. Council Member Nancy Carter says as cash-strapped as the city is now, it might not be the right time to begin the program. "If you put out a 100% more recycling you're going to double the amount of time that it takes our employees to pick up," says Carter. The City has no estimate how much the lure of gift certificates could push up the amount of recycling. There's also a concern about putting corporate logos on City property.
