The Charlotte Bobcats made it official Sunday morning: When they rename themselves as the Charlotte Hornets next year, they’ll also bring back the old Hornets’ purple and teal color scheme. Those were the primary colors when the Hornets were Charlotte’s NBA team from 1998 to 2002.

The new color palette also adds black, cool gray and light blue as secondary colors. Owner Michael Jordan said in an announcement Sunday morning on the Bobcats’ website,  “It was important (to us) to acknowledge the heritage of the Charlotte Hornets when bringing the name back to the market.”

The Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002, but this year gave up the name, to become the Pelicans. That prompted a campaign to reclaim the Hornets name for Charlotte.  The Bobcats said they're planning another round of their " Buzz City" campaign this week in Charlotte, with new TV ads, billboards and other messages promoting purple and teal as part of the coming name change.

DUKE ENERGY GUILTY OF WIND FARM BIRD DEATHS

Charlotte-based Duke Energy on Friday pleaded guilty to killing eagles and other birds at two Wyoming wind farms. The plea came as part of the first enforcement of environmental laws protecting birds against wind energy facilities.  Under the settlement, Duke Energy and its renewable energy arm agreed to pay $1 million. Much of the money will go to conservation.  The company acknowledged that 14 eagles and 149 other birds died at two wind farms outside Casper, Wyoming, from 2009 to 2013. It was the first time a wind energy company had been prosecuted for the death of a protect bird, even though those deaths are usually a federal violation.

NEW LAWS IN N.C. DEC. 1

More than 40 new laws take effect December 1st in North Carolina, including new and more severe punishments for adults who abuse or endanger children or who fail to report malice against them.   Other new laws would more than double maximum prison terms for the most serious child abuse charge and create a requirement that parents alert authorities when a child under 16 is missing after 24 hours.  Another law passed this year requires a new minimum $500 fine for people who fail to stop for school buses dropping off or picking up students.
