Twenty years ago Thursday, a USAir jet crashed near Charlotte-Douglas airport, killing 37 of the 52 passengers aboard. Flight 1016 was arriving in Charlotte on a flight from Columbia, SC, on the evening of July 2, 1994. All five crew members survived the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board's investigation concluded that the plane flew into a "wind-shear," produced by a rapidly-developing thunderstorm near the airport. The NTSB's crash report placed some of the blame on the flight crew for attempting to land in those conditions, but also said air traffic controllers failed to give the pilots timely weather information.
