A voter registration mailing sent by an arm of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity has prompted hundreds of calls to the North Carolina Board of Elections.
Many were addressed to dead people, under-age children, even a cat. They also contained some incorrect information. For example, the mailers told people they needed to register at least thirty days before the election. In North Carolina they have until October 10, 25 days before the election.
Donald Bryson, a spokesman for Americans for Prosperity Foundation, called it a technical error. He says this is part of a national effort to register people to vote, and that other state’s information likely wound up on the North Carolina mailers by accident.
"If we had said the deadline is 20 days out from the election or 15 days out from the election, then I would say that’s an actual problem. But we’re not suppressing anybody’s ability to vote or causing any problems with their voter registration with that sort of error," said Bryson.
A state Board of Elections spokesman says the board has contacted the foundation to determine exactly what happened. But he says there’s no indication at this point that Americans for Prosperity Foundation made the mistakes intentionally.
