One of the only discounted theaters in the Charlotte area will be closing its doors next week.
When Cinemark Movies 10 opened in Matthews in 1995, tickets were $1.50 and popular films that had left their initial run at full price theaters could be seen on the big screen, like the 90's classic Casper.
Tickets have gone up slightly since then, ranging from $3 to $5. The goal has stayed the same over the years: to provide an inexpensive place for families and couples to enjoy.
Assistant Manager Douglas Jones says the theater's closing will have an effect on the community.
"It will leave a lot of people who might have be struggling with financial situtations...it might be a little difficult for them to take their family to go see a movie," says Jones.
Despite convenient streaming networks like Netflix and Amazon Prime, Jones believes it was the cheap tickets and good popcorn that allowed one of the only discounted theaters in the area to have such an impressive run.
A phone call to Cinemark’s headquarters was not immediately returned. The theater’s last day of business is Sunday, August 23.
