Final results are in for two of last week’s Mecklenburg County General Assembly primaries and both are close enough that recounts are planned.
Incumbent Rep. Charles Jeter of Huntersville apparently has survived a challenge from Tom Davis in the 92nd District Republican primary. After provisional and absentee ballots were counted Tuesday, Jeter’s 28-vote lead over Davis grew to 35 votes.
Davis, who lives at Mountain Island Lake, has requested a recount. That’s allowed since the margin between the two is less than 1 percent.
I-77 toll lanes were a key issue in the campaign. Jeter has been fighting the toll lanes in the legislature, but Davis said he didn't do enough early on to halt the project. Davis out-polled Jeter in the northern part of the district in Huntersville, where toll opposition is high. Jeter won the southern precincts.
“It was a real squeaker,” Jeter said after last week’s primary. “It was a lot closer than we would have liked.” He expects his victory to stand.
The winner faces Democrat Chaz Beasley in the November election.
In the 103rd District Democratic primary, Rochelle Rivas holds a 13-vote lead over Noah Lieberman. Lieberman also has requested a recount.
The winner will challenge Republican state Rep. Bill Brawley of Matthews in November.
Both recounts are scheduled Wednesday at noon.
