The new interim health director for Mecklenburg County starts work Monday. Alma Harris takes over for Marcus Plescia. He resigned after his leadership was called into question when it was revealed that the agency had failed to timely notify nearly 200 women about abnormal Pap smear results. But the hiring of Harris to a $20,000 a month position is drawing scrutiny.

In the end it was closer than expected. But in politics a win is a win. And last night Republican, Ralph Norman defeated Democrat Archie Parnell in a special election for South Carolina's 5th Congressional District.

There were nearly 88,000 ballots cast last night. The margin of victory was 2,836 votes.

The Islamic Center of Charlotte is on alert following recent attacks in London and Virginia on Muslims observing Ramadan. The Islamic Center’s Jibril Hough says security is already high during Ramadan but there haven’t been any changes in response to the attacks.

Saturday is the second anniversary of the shootings in which nine people were murdered at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.

Charlotte resident Malcolm Graham told jurors in the Dylann Roof trial Friday how much of a void is in his life because of the murder of his sister. Cynthia Hurd is one of the nine people whom Roof killed at Charleston’s  Emanuel AME Church in June of 2015.

Alexandra Olgin of South Carolina Public Radio spoke to WFAE from the federal courthouse in Charleston. She says Graham told a story about his sister, a librarian for over 30 years, after the birth of his first child.
