It's become cool to eat from a truck in Charlotte.

More than 30 mobile kitchens serving gourmet fare have sprung up here recently and they've been welcomed warmly by city and neighborhood leaders - unlike the chilly reception Charlotte's original food trucks faced.

These new mobile chefs in Charlotte talk like battle-scarred road warriors with stories of setting up in empty lots, hoping people would come.

Project LIFT Teachers Go Back To School Early For Training

School doesn't start until August 27, but teachers at nine West Charlotte schools are going back to work today. They're getting an additional week-and-a-half of training focused on teaching students living in poverty. That's nearly all of the kids at these schools, which are part of a private partnership called Project LIFT. They'll also look at ways to get parents to participate in their child's education and go through a poverty simulation.

The Carolina Panthers are running full-speed through their training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg. And we're tracking one rookie trying to make the final team roster against long shot odds.

Brenton Bersin is the only player actually from Charlotte. He was a star wide receiver at Charlotte Latin High and Wofford College. And as WFAE's Tanner Latham reports, he's also got a unique tie to the team's owner.

Charlotte sanitation workers held the first of four rallies last night timed to pressure city leaders into giving their labor union more recognition. They want more pay raises, better working conditions and regular meetings between union leaders and city officials.

Common Complaints Emerge From Revaluation Hearings

A private firm enlisted to investigate Mecklenburg County's 2011 property revaluation is nearing the end of a public hearing schedule.

Seventy-seven people attended a hearing in Matthews last week to sound-off on the county's revaluation process. A hearing in Cornelius drew 170 people and went for three hours. The next two meetings - on Beatties Ford Road last week and at the Government Center last night drew fewer than 20 people each.

But attendance numbers aside, audit manager Emmett Curl says the hearings are yielding a similar set of concerns.

Charlotte Observer: Mecklenburg Commissioners Cool To City, County Merger

A proposal by Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to study political consolidation of the city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County governments appears to have little support among county commissioners.
Only one commissioner, George Dunlap, a Democrat, said he would vote yes to a study. Democrat Jennifer Roberts and Chair Harold Cogdell, who is unaffiliated, said they would consider it, but only if the county's municipalities are well-represented in the process.
Cogdell said he also would like the study to include nonpartisan elections.

Duke Provides Thousands Of Emails, Internal Docs For Investigation

Duke Energy has given thousands of internal documents and emails to North Carolina utility regulators in an ongoing investigation over the company's recent merger with Progress Energy.

North Carolina Utilities Commissioners are trying to figure out if Duke Energy misled them in pushing for approval of the merger with Progress Energy and then abruptly ousting the company's would-be-CEO.

These documents are the next step in that investigation, though most of them will not be released to the public.
