About 50 students taking English As A Second Language at five Charlotte-Mecklenburg High Schools have photo diaries on display at the Light Factory through July. WFAE's Simone Orendain met student photographer and Myers Park 10th grader Paula Moreno at the Middleton-McMillan Gallery.

School Performance

This week, we tried to get a sense of what area schools are doing to increase school performance. But what exactly constitutes quality? The most common measure of a school's quality is test scores. But many people see this as a "one size fits all" approach that doesn't accurately reflect a school's true performance.

Simone Orendain takes a look at some of both CMS and Union County's efforts to increase
performance. She also talks to some parents who looked beyond their school's rankings when they made a decision on where to send their child to school.

Lawsuit Could Halt Uptown Baseball

A lawsuit was filed last week against Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools that if successful would prevent the completion of a land trade between the city, CMS, and Mecklenburg County. That would effectively derail an effort to build a minor league baseball stadium in the city's uptown. The lawsuit was filed by Jerry Reese, a Charlotte real estate attorney. WFAE's Scott Graf spoke with Reese and began by asking what grounds he's filing the litigation.

NASCAR Hall of Fame Update

As it does every May, the NASCAR world this week has turned its attention to Charlotte. Each of the sport's top three circuits will race at Lowe's Motor Speedway between now and Memorial Day. To take advantage of that added attention, NASCAR Hall of Fame officials will unveil that attraction's first-ever logo.
