They believed that speaking up and taking action was the only way to draw attention to the problems they saw.</p><p>Their main weapon was to gain notice, but they needed an outlet to gain the attention. So staging rallies and protests, all under their recognized 1<sup>st</sup> Amendment right to “assembly and petition” their government, was at first small. In a statement, DeMint says he's leaving the Senate but - quote - "not leaving the fight."&nbsp;</p><p>South Carolina Republicans knew Senator DeMint planned to retire after his second term in 2016, but they hoped to have him until then.</p><p>"Senator DeMint's been a rock star for us," says South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Chad Connelly.
