It's summer movie time, which means big stars, big thrills and big box office blockbusters - at least the studios hope so. This time every year, we invite local film critics Matt Brunson and Sean O'Connell to talk about the summer's biggest movies - which ones to catch and which ones to avoid. Whether you're looking for superheroes in Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel, fast cars in Fast & Furious or some throwback SciFi in Star Trek, we'll cover them all. And you can't talk blockbusters without talking about those larger-than-life action sequences - so we've invited the visual effects supervisor for Iron Man 3 to explain how these effects work and the history of special effects in film, when Charlotte Talks.

Eastland Mall To Be Demolished, Redevelopment Plans Coming This Week

Charlotte taxpayers spent $13 million last summer to buy the deserted Eastland Mall. The city council will vote Tuesday night on spending another $800,000 to tear the mall down. City leaders are hopeful the demolition will make way for new life on the blighted block.

It received $20 million in state incentives and lawmakers are now debating a bill that would remove the state's film tax credit – the same credit that brought the Iron Man 3 production to the state.

Charlotte taxpayers may not know it, but they own a mall. The city bought Eastland Mall back in August for $13 million. When it opened in 1975, it was the largest mall in North Carolina. Then came a decade of steady decline. By 2010 it was completely vacant. WFAE's Julie Rose reports on the latest effort to bring Eastland Mall back to life.

Part One: Charlotte Film Society 30th Anniversary. Charlotte is a growing, changing city and in the last few decades, Charlotte residents have experienced a growth in their appetite for culture. The demand for different kinds of culture is one that the Charlotte Film Society has tried to fill over the years. During their 30th anniversary this year, they’re celebrating the films they’ve brought to Charlotte audiences over the years that wouldn’t have been seen here, had it not been for their work. We’ll take a look at some of the different kinds of films and the many series and conversations the Charlotte Film Society brings here and how the organization has evolved and grown as the city of Charlotte has grown.
