UNC Charlotte Aims For Zero Waste At Football Stadium

Take a second to remember the last time you left a stadium after a football game. You probably noticed a lot trash - cups, plastic bottles, and other garbage scattered about the stands and walkways.

But a group at UNC Charlotte is hoping to avoid that for the school's brand new football stadium with a “Zero Waste” initiative. The school had a beta run a couple of weeks ago during the team’s spring practice game, which was attended by more than 13,000 people.

Kate Popejoy is an education professor at UNC Charlotte and the faculty advisor for the student group behind the initiative. She stopped by ours studios to discuss the initiative with WFAE’s Marshall Terry.

Areva To Add 130 Jobs, Make Charlotte Its North American HQ

Nuclear company Areva is moving its North American headquarters to the University area in Charlotte, where it already has more than 500 employees. The company plans to add another 130 jobs – mostly in engineering.

Areva CEO Michael Rencheck says Charlotte won out over Bethesda, Maryland and Lynchburg, Virginia.

Solar-Powered House Under Construction At UNC Charlotte

The Levine Cancer Institute and UNC Charlotte are teaming up for a new project they hope will make a difference in the world of cancer research. It's called the Charlotte Pancreatic Cancer Project.

UNC Charlotte and the Levine Cancer Institute will be making $400,000 in grants available to scientists and doctors at both institutions.

UNC Charlotte Student Government Discusses Gender-Neutral Housing

UNC Charlotte’s Student Government Association is meeting November 29 to discuss gender-neutral housing. The proposal would ask school administrators to allow students to choose roommates of the opposite sex. The student group Campus Allies has been working for more than a year to get gender neutral housing at UNCC. Anthony Dondero is a transgendered member of the group. He chose to live off campus.

'EPIC' Program At UNCC Fueling Energy Industry

The new $77 million engineering and energy building on UNC Charlotte’s campus hasn’t even had a formal grand opening ceremony, and already it’s fueling the local energy work force.

Johan Enslin underscored that point as he gave Governor Bev Perdue of the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center – or “EPIC” - which he directs. It's a four-story collection of laboratories bathed in natural light on the edge of UNC Charlotte’s campus.

One of the labs features a replica of the nerve center at Duke Energy.

E.K. Fretwell, Who Put UNCC On The Map, Dies

E.K. Fretwell arrived at UNC Charlotte in 1979 with a national reputation as an educator. In his 10 years as chancellor, he conferred that national reputation on the one-time commuter college in the rolling countryside northeast of the city.

Fretwell died Thursday afternoon at The Cypress. He was 88.

While there were no helmets or pads, there was a lot of running.

About 85 football players, all decked out in their squeaky clean t-shirts, shorts, and cleats ran full field sprints. For the next three weeks, they’ll be doing these daily conditioning drills and learning their position techniques.

The first game is not until August 31st, 2013, over a year away. Because of that, head coach Brad Lambert says one of his biggest challenges is to keep it these practices creative.

Nearly one-third of American workers get fewer than six hours of sleep a night. That's according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And with increasing attention to disorders, especially sleep apnea, the number of sleep centers across the country has increased. In response, UNC Charlotte and UNC-Chapel Hill have teamed up to offer an online degree in neurodiagnostics and sleep science. The schools tout it as the first bachelor’s program of its kind in the country.
