College graduation season continued in the Charlotte area Sunday morning, with commencement ceremonies at Johnson C. Smith University and Davidson College. Ambassador and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young was the guest speaker at J.C. Smith’s 141st graduation, which began at 8am at the university’s Irwin Belk Complex. The university presented honorary degrees to Young and Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx.

Davidson College officials confirmed Wednesday what has been rumored for weeks, that most Wildcats’ sports teams will leave the Southern Conference for the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year.

The top headline in the October 1^st, 1959, Mecklenburg Gazette proclaims “Great Economic Progress is Seen.” A few days earlier, Gov. Luther Hodges visited the Catawba River to set off the first dynamite blast for construction of the Cowan’s Ford Dam – the site of a Revolutionary War battle.

The writer of the story called it the “beginning of a new era in the history of the Catawba River Valley.”

Davidson College Gets Biggest Gift Ever

Davidson College has received its largest gift ever, $45 million from the Duke Endowment that college officials say will be used to “transform the academic heart of the campus.” The money will pay for renovations to a half-dozen campus buildings beginning next year, as well as a new science building.
