Bechtler Museum http://wfae.org en Architecture And Urban Design In Charlotte http://wfae.org/post/architecture-and-urban-design-charlotte
Charlotte often gets a bad rap for its lack of good architecture around the city, but there are newer structures cropping up that are starting to turn that feeling around. The Bechtler Museum building is one of those new, innovatively designed buildings, which opened back in 2010. The building is only the second public building in the country designed by renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta. Today, the Bechtler opens an exhibition of Botta’s work around the world, and so we’ll talk about urban design and iconic buildings worldwide and in Charlotte, and what architecture can do to shape the texture of a city.

Fri, 31 Jan 2014 05:00:00 +0000 44054 at http://wfae.org Architecture And Urban Design In Charlotte 1968 On Display At Bechtler http://wfae.org/post/1968-display-bechtler
Since August, the Bechtler Museum uptown has had the exhibition Modernism in Changing Times: Works From 1968. In the collection, 1968 represents a blend of media, objective, style, nationality and scale. 101 works of sculpture, paintings, prints, artist books and textiles are featured. It touches on some of the major art movements of 1968.
Thu, 07 Nov 2013 22:12:35 +0000 Craig Elmore 38805 at http://wfae.org 1968 On Display At Bechtler Arts Funding Troubles, part 2: What It Will Take To Survive http://wfae.org/post/arts-funding-troubles-part-2-what-it-will-take-survive
Charlotte's arts funding landscape is grim.

The Arts and Science Council was created decades ago to be the primary fundraiser for Charlotte's cultural sector. But it is no longer the money-raising powerhouse it once was. Cultural institutions that rely on the ASC, are struggling to pay their bills. And that new museum complex Uptown is in the middle of what arts leaders call a "perfect storm."

Fri, 12 Jul 2013 10:00:00 +0000 Julie Rose & Briana Duggan 31044 at http://wfae.org Arts Funding Troubles, part 2: What It Will Take To Survive Bechtler Exhibit Examines Art Through Artists' Relationships http://wfae.org/post/bechtler-exhibit-examines-art-through-artists-relationships
Warhol and Basquiat, Monet and Renoir ; Some of history’s greatest artists were also great friends.
Tue, 26 Feb 2013 17:29:46 +0000 Briana Duggan 22105 at http://wfae.org Bechtler Exhibit Examines Art Through Artists' Relationships Giacometti, Target Of Con Artists, On Display At Bechtler http://wfae.org/post/giacometti-target-con-artists-display-bechtler
The most expensive sculpture ever sold at auction was by a Swiss artist named Alberto Giacometti. It went for $104 million in 2010 - and because Giacometti's work has become so valuable, it's now a top target for counterfeiters. Charlotte has its own small claim to the artist - the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art houses a distinctive collection of Giacometti work now on display.
Fri, 28 Sep 2012 12:32:25 +0000 Julie Rose 12538 at http://wfae.org Giacometti, Target Of Con Artists, On Display At Bechtler Firebird Patrol http://wfae.org/post/firebird-patrol
One of the most popular Uptown photo ops during the DNC will be the Firebird, the tall, mirrored glass sculpture standing outside the Bechtler Museum.

That kind of publicity is priceless, but the museum knows the exposure could also attract vandals.
