Some behind-the-scenes details of police operations during the Democratic National Convention are coming to light.

The $50 million federal grant Charlotte got for DNC security included a requirement that outside consultants monitor CMPD's efforts and prepare a report. Deputy Chief Harold Medlock says the report praises CMPD's coordination and communication with protest groups, including Chief Rodney Monroe's constant presence on the street during demonstrations.

The Transportation Security Administration has long been criticized for reacting to threats, rather than proactively preventing them: Someone tries sneak a liquid bomb onto a plane, so TSA limits the amount of liquid travelers can carry on. A guy disguises a bomb in his underwear so TSA installs bodyscanners at airports. But yesterday, the head of TSA was in Charlotte pitching a more targeted approach to airport screening. Local Schools Review Security Protocols After Connecticut Shooting

School leaders in the Charlotte area are taking a closer look at security procedures following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

At a press conference Monday afternoon, CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison said the shootings prompted the district to ask “tough questions.” For example, what would the response have been if the shooting happened in a CMS school?
