WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is rescinding an Obama-era policy that paved the way for legalized marijuana to flourish in states across the country, creating new confusion about enforcement and use just three days after a new legalization law went into effect in California.

Most Mecklenburg County computer systems used by the public are now back online after an early December cyber-attack. County Manager Dena Diorio told county commissioners Wednesday night that remaining systems should be online by the end of this week. Diorio also said the county will speed up work to protect systems from future attacks. 

County commissioners Wednesday night approved an exchange of land with the Charlotte Housing Authority that will allow the expansion of Pearl Street Park off Kenilworth Avenue. The deal also could lead to more affordable housing in the Midtown area.

It's taking longer than expected to restore Mecklenburg County computer systems disabled after a cyberattack last month. County officials had hoped to finish the job by New Year's, but the work continues.

Democrats at the state legislature in Raleigh walked out of a committee meeting Wednesday that was looking at potential changes to judicial election districts and judge selection. The walkout happened after the Republican committee leader, Sen. Dan Bishop of Mecklenburg County, would not allow testimony from a retired judge that Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper sent to speak on his behalf.

The White House says Omarosa Manigault Newman — one of President Donald Trump’s most prominent African-American supporters — plans to leave the administration next month.

Democrat Doug Jones has won the Alabama Senate special election, according to The Associated Press. The victory is a stunning upset in a deeply red state that voted overwhelmingly for President Trump, who backed Republican Roy Moore explicitly in the final days of the campaign despite multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and assault.
