For years now, Democrats in the South Carolina State Legislature have tried to get early voting approved. They plan to try again this year, too. State Democratic Representative Joe Neal hopes the success of early voting elsewhere - coupled with long lines voters experienced in South Carolina - will finally change things. "What we need is to make voting as easy as possible for the citizens of this state," says Neal. "And we've seen it done successfully in NC and roughly 32 other states, so we know it works.

Area Democrats Celebrate Obama Win

It was an emotional night for Democrats in Charlotte - particularly those who were involved in the Civil Rights movement. County Commissioner and civil rights activist Vilma Leake was overcome with emotion at news that Barack Obama had won. "I can recall the '60s when we marched. When we strove to vote. And tonight God has answered our prayers. Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, I am free at last," Leake exclaimed. She joined hundreds of exuberant Democrats in celebrating the election results at a party in Charlotte last night.
