It was a week of firsts for North Carolina’s new U.S. Senator, Thom Tillis. The senator filed his first legislation, an amendment Thursday that would open much of the East Coast to off-shore drilling for oil and gas.

The Kilah Davenport Child Protection Act passed the U.S. Senate unanimously on Wednesday night. It's a bill that asks Attorney General Eric Holder to issue a state-by-state report on child abuse prevention laws within 6 months. The goal is to get states to increase punishment for child abuse offenders.

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx has been confirmed as the next U.S. Transportation Secretary. The Senate voted unanimously in his favor Thursday afternoon.

Before the vote, West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller praised Foxx.

"He is an expert on transportation, intermodal and otherwise," Rockefeller says. "He understands the lay of the land and he's done it. He's a superb and qualified person who is very much needed to overlook our enormous transportation system, which is in trouble"
