WFAE is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

President / General Manager

The Organization
WFAE 90.7 is a member-supported, locally owned, independent radio station committed to delivering the highest quality news and public affairs programming for its listeners in the Charlotte Metrolina region, as well as Piedmont and the Carolina foothills. WFAE is the most listened-to public radio station in the Charlotte area, offering a broad range of national, international, and regional news from National Public Radio, the BBC, Public Radio International, American Public Media, and WFAE’s award-winning newsroom. The station is committed to providing fact-based, in-depth information that helps create a more informed, engaged, and empowered community and enables citizens to better understand shared challenges, seize important opportunities, and enjoy this special place they call home.
WFAE was founded in 1981 as a service of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  In 1993, the University relinquished the license to the University Radio Foundation, a nonprofit community board. As Charlotte has grown, so has WFAE, with a creative website in addition to broadcasts that now reach more than 200,000 listeners a week in a 22-county area.
The Opportunity
The WFAE President/General Manager role is a transformational leadership opportunity to impact strong local content, community engagement, and partnerships in one of the most enlightened communities in the “New South.”
Looking ahead, the Board and executive leadership of WFAE are exploring ways to better serve the Charlotte metropolitan area by:
1. Growing revenue so that WFAE can produce additional excellent content.
2. Enhancing multi-media capacity to deliver the content where the audience and members want to access it.
3. Growing the base of users for that content by expanding audience demographics.
4. Strengthening the organization so it can continue to do all of these things efficiently and effectively.
The Position
The Board of Directors of WFAE is seeking a President / General Manager who is a mission-focused, business-minded leader with a passion for public media and with a history of increasing community engagement.  It is critical that the President / General Manager is an idea generator who captures opportunities at every turn and explores new ways to creatively expand the WFAE brand and product offerings in order to serve a broader target audience and strengthen WFAE’s competitive position.  The ideal candidate will bring a community building sensitivity, entrepreneurial spirit, and business enhancement track record of success to WFAE.
The President / General Manager will oversee all operations and lead an organization of professionals in broadcast / digital content operations, news, engineering, fundraising, corporate underwriting, membership, marketing and communications, board relations, finance, and human resource management.  This is a high visibility position with regular interface with the board members, key external business partners, and members of the Charlotte arts, education, and public affairs community.
Candidate Specification: Key Selection Criteria
An ideally qualified candidate will have:
A passion for the core values of WFAE and be driven by its local news mission.  The candidate should demonstrate a vision for breaking new ground in multi-platform digital content delivery.
A minimum of 10-15 years experience in scaling an organization (preferably in a media company or a local Charlotte organization).  Significant experience in managing a “values-driven” organization and/or in public media management is desirable.  Functional experience in revenue management and/or content management along with top level management is desirable.
Demonstrated track record of success structuring and managing fund raising to successful closure.
Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to inspire performance that exceeds expectations with limited resources.  A results-proven track record of success exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation with evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
The ability to connect with staff, both on an individual level and in large groups, and the capacity to enforce accountability, learning the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed.
Comfort with being the community “face” of WFAE and a desire to seek out engagement with donors, underwriters, and community thought leaders.
A high level of business acumen including successful brand and fiscal management.  The ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.
Ability to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available, while being unafraid to take charge of a situation.  Experience in overcoming resistance to change and willingness to take unpopular stands when necessary while still demonstrating empathy and respect for stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required; MBA or advanced degree is highly desirable.
